# Tim Cook and Operational Innovation

It's difficult not to address Tim Cook's semi-retirement from Apple. 

As everyone now knows, Tim 'Apple' will no longer be leading company operations but will mostly become a political buffer, trying to mitigate the impact of tariffs and other crazy stances the current US administration will take in the near future.

For me, the big takeaway is that if you had made a $1,000 investment in AAPL when Cook became CEO, you would have netted more than $20,000 today. And I see that not as a stock market and financial prowess, but as an operational one. Tim Cook famously transformed Apple into the most efficient operation on the planet. From negotiating massive-volume deals with Samsung and TSMC to upskilling the entire electronics manufacturing sector in China single-handedly (a controversial geopolitical move in hindsight), not to mention reinventing microprocessor architecture, Apple achieved major breakthroughs under Cook. 

But these breakthroughs were rather invisible to Apple customers. 

They were below the surface, under the products' hoods. And what I see as a crowning achievement is not what the market expected for twenty years (a new device category as the iPhone was), but probably the MacBook Neo. A whole computer built around a mobile phone architecture, at a price point that no one can touch in terms of the performance delivered. 

As I just closed a workshop with 75 top Saint-Gobain executives from all regions on strategic organic growth, and I'm kicking off another program for 300 engineers and scientists at Merck on internal and operational innovation, I vividly keep this principle in mind:
